What Is Family Counselling & Relationship Therapy?
Family counselling and relationship therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on improving communication and resolving conflicts between loved ones. It involves a trained therapist working with family members or couples to address issues, enhance understanding and promote positive interactions.
This form of therapy and counselling aims to strengthen bonds. Our team foster a supportive environment and equip individuals with the tools to navigate challenges together.
What Can We Help With?
Our team of Psychologists, Psychotherapists and Counsellors are trained to assist with a variety of relationship issues. Examples include but are not limited to:
Family Difficulties
Family difficulties can manifest in various forms, including communication breakdowns, unresolved conflicts and challenges in adapting to changing dynamics such as blended family difficulties. This often requires open dialogue, empathy and support to facilitate understanding and promote healthier relationships within the family unit.
Relationship Challenges
We offer therapy for relationship issues, helping those facing failing or strained relationships. Our expert team can identify patterns of behaviour that might be causing the issues and teach useful techniques on how to diminish relationship challenges for couples, helping individuals to let go of anger and build a trusting partnership.
Friendships
We can help those facing friendship difficulties, offering tools to help friends resolve conflict, develop healthy boundaries, work through issues and restore trust. Our counsellors and therapists will offer useful strategies to help maintain lasting and stable friendships which in turn promotes positive well-being.
Sexual Difficulties
Sexual difficulties in relationships can encompass a range of challenges, including intimacy issues, differing desires or physical concerns. Sexual relationship therapy can help to generate open communication and mutual understanding to resolve difficulties, fostering a more fulfilling and connected relationship.
Adoption/ Fostering
Adoption and fostering can present unique challenges for families. Issues may include the complexities of attachment, helping children integrate into a new family and providing ongoing support to address any challenges that may arise. Effective communication, patience and access to professional guidance can help.
Family Relationship Counselling in 3 Steps
Step 1: Assessment And Understanding
Family or relationship counselling begins with an assessment phase where the therapist works to understand the dynamics, communication patterns and specific challenges within the family or relationship. Through open dialogue and active listening, the therapist gains a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.
Step 2: Identification Of Dynamics
Our expert therapist will help to identify recurring patterns and dynamics that contribute to conflicts or challenges within the family or relationship. This involves exploring communication styles, coping mechanisms and underlying issues to learn how certain behaviours may be influencing the overall dynamics.
Step 3: Collaborative Intervention
The next step involves collaboratively setting therapeutic goals such as improving communication, resolving specific conflicts or fostering a more supportive and empathetic environment. The therapist introduces interventions and strategies tailored to the unique needs of the family or relationship to foster positive changes.

The benefits include improved understanding among family members, enhanced coping mechanisms and the development of healthier dynamics, fostering a more harmonious family unit.
Does Relationship Therapy Work?
Relationship therapy, when approached with commitment and openness from both partners, has the potential to be highly effective in resolving conflicts, improving communication and fostering a healthier connection. The success of relationship therapy often depends on the willingness of the individuals involved to actively engage in the process and implement the strategies learnt during the sessions.
Do You Offer Father Daughter Relationship Therapy?
Yes, we do offer father and daughter relationship therapy at The Oak Tree Practice. Whatever the issue, we have a team of 37 qualified therapists who will be able to assist accordingly. We offer a safe and comfortable environment for family members to open up, express their feelings and collaborate.
Will My Appointment Be Covered By Insurance?
Most of our therapists and counsellors are covered by insurers such as BUPA, AXA, Aviva, Simply Health, Vitality Health, Cigna and WPA. However, we recommend double checking when booking your appointment or looking through “The Team” section to confirm that this will be the case.
How Long Do Therapy Sessions Last?
Each therapy session at The Oak Tree Practice lasts for 50 minutes. They can be completed in person in one of our London clinics, over the phone or online via zoom.
If you wish to have a longer session, you could always book 2 sessions together. However, we usually recommend splitting up appointments so that you have time to reflect on what has been discussed and so that you can practice any techniques you may have learnt.
What Happens If I Have To Cancel My Appointment On The Day?
If you need to cancel a session, you may do so as long as you give at least 24 hours notice. Otherwise the full fee will still apply for sessions missed or cancelled within 24 hours of the appointment time. For those funded by insurance, cancellation fees will not be covered so you will be personally liable for any fees incurred.
