Hi, I’m Maya! I’m a Counselling Psychologist.

Can you tell me a bit about your background?

I started off working in the charity sector before re-training to be become a psychologist after I experienced therapy, and saw firsthand the positive impact it can have on someone’s life. I completed a Masters in Psychology at the University of Westminster before completing my doctoral training at City University.

Over the past eight years I have worked with young people and adults in a variety of settings in both the NHS and the third sector. These included:

  • A University service for students facing mental health difficulties;
  • Health psychology services for individuals struggling with health-related problems such as a cancer diagnosis or the termination of pregnancy;
  • A physical health and neurodiversity service for those with learning difficulties or a physical disability, and;
  • An online therapy service for individuals with mental health difficulties such as trauma, eating disorders, anxiety and depression.

What will it be like when I meet you?

By coming to therapy, you have already shown courage and commitment to yourself. My role is to help you on this journey by creating a warm and non-judgemental space where you can share your experiences and concerns.

In our first session you will get a chance to experience what therapy with me might feel like and explore whether together, we are the right fit to meet your therapeutic needs. I will ask you questions to help me understand your current difficulties and how I can best support you in the work.

In my sessions, I aim to stimulate empowered exploration alongside compassionate accountability towards growth. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I believe the most powerful change comes from a mixture of shared trust, responsibility and engagement. As such, we will continue to review our progress together, making changes and adaptations as we go.

What therapies do you use and what kind of difficulties do you help people with?

In my training and subsequent professional experience, I have developed skills in psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behavioural therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). I use an integrative approach which means I draw on a number of different therapies to tailor my sessions to the person in front of me.

What are your interests outside of psychology?

I enjoy reading and cooking, challenging myself to learn and try new things. This is also my approach to living in London where I try to make the most of all the city has to offer.
