Cognitive Assessment

Sometimes, we notice that certain things feel easier than others. You might find you excel with words but struggle with numbers, or perhaps you’re great with practical problem-solving but find memory tasks more challenging.

What is A Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment is a structured way to explore how your brain works across different areas. During the assessment, you’ll complete a series of tasks and puzzles that measure things like memory, attention, problem-solving, speed of thinking, and reasoning. These start simple and become more challenging—most people don’t complete every task (and that’s completely normal).

Once the assessment is complete, your psychologist will review the results to identify your strengths and any areas where extra support, strategies, or adjustments could help.

How To Get A Cognitive Assessment Test

Step 1: Get In Touch

Simply enquire via our contact form, WhatsApp us on 07926 713 198 or call us on 020 8936 7666 to book a cognitive assessment or an initial consultation. You can speak to us about your goals, any concerns you have and what you would like to understand from the assessment.

Step 2: Private Cognitive Assessment

During the session, you will complete a range of structured tasks that look at how your brain processes, remembers, focuses and solves problems. The process is supportive, calm and paced to ensure you feel comfortable throughout.

Step 3: Results & Feedback

Once the assessment is complete, your psychologist will carefully review the results. They will then meet with you or call you to discuss:

  • Your cognitive strengths

  • Any areas that might benefit from support or adjustments

  • Practical recommendations tailored to daily life, study or work

This session is collaborative and there are no “good” or “bad” results, only information to empower you.

Step 4: Follow-Up & Ongoing Support

If helpful, we can provide follow-up sessions to support you in applying strategies, accessing accommodations or working on targeted cognitive skills. Some people choose to continue with psychological therapy or support; others simply use the insights and move forward confidently.

Where Can I Get A Cognitive Assessment Near Me?

We offer cognitive assessments in London and in our Leeds clinic, providing a supportive and calm environment. In London, we have three clinic locations across Finchley (N3 1QB), Brixton/Clapham (SW2 5UL) and Stratford (E15 1NT) , and we also offer appointments in Chapel Allerton in Leeds (LS7 4NY).

While many people prefer to attend their cognitive assessment face-to-face, we know travel is not always practical so we can also offer parts of the assessment online if you are based elsewhere in the UK. People often travel or join us remotely from areas such as Bath, Birmingham, Brighton, Cornwall, Essex, Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford and Suffolk, among many others. This can be especially helpful if you are looking for a private cognitive assessment but are not local to one of our clinic locations.

Why Might An Adult Have A Cognitive Assessment?

adult-cognitive-assessment
  • To explore learning strengths and challenges
  • To understand difficulties with memory, concentration, or organisation
  • To identify whether a specific learning difference (like dyslexia or dyscalculia) may be present
  • As part of a diagnostic process for neurodivergence (such as ADHD)
  • To inform workplace adjustments or support needs
  • To check changes in thinking skills after illness, injury, or stress

The aim is to give you a clear picture of how your mind works, so you can make informed choices and get the right support—whether at work, in study, or in daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cognitive Assessments

Do You Offer Online Cognitive Assessments?

Yes, we can offer parts of a cognitive assessment online. Many people appreciate being able to complete certain sections from home, especially if travelling to our clinics is not convenient.

Some elements of the assessment are best completed in person to ensure accuracy, so we will discuss the format that suits your needs and goals. If you are based outside London or Leeds, a blended approach (some sessions online, some in person) can be a helpful and flexible option. Our aim is always to make the assessment process accessible, comfortable and tailored to you.

What Cognitive Assessment Tools Are Commonly Used?

Cognitive assessments often use standardised tools designed to measure skills like memory, attention, language, problem-solving and processing speed. Our team will select the assessment tools based on your needs, age and the questions we’re trying to answer.

These might include puzzles, timed tasks, visual exercises and problem-solving activities. The aim is to build a clear rounded picture of how your mind works day-to-day.

Can You Help Me With A Fast Cognitive Assessment?

Yes, we can offer a quick cognitive assessment or a more focused cognitive screening if you need prompt insights rather than a full diagnostic report. This can be helpful when time is limited or you are looking for an initial understanding before deciding on next steps.

However, a full assessment provides more detail and personalised recommendations, so we will help you decide which approach is right for you. Our team will guide you towards the option that best supports your goals.

Are Cognitive Assessments Covered By Insurance?

Whether a cognitive assessment is covered depends on your individual insurance policy, as some providers include private assessments while others do not. We can supply the documentation and clinical reports you may need to make a claim directly with your insurer. It is always best to check your policy details beforehand.

What Is The Purpose Of A Cognitive Assessment?

A cognitive assessment is designed to give a clear picture of how your brain processes information across areas like memory, attention, reasoning and problem-solving. It helps identify your strengths as well as areas where additional support or strategies could be useful.

The insights gained can guide daily life, education, work or therapeutic interventions. Essentially, it is a personalised way to understand how you think and learn.

How Long Does A Cognitive Assessment Take?

The length of a cognitive assessment can vary depending on the depth and type of testing needed. Typically, assessments take a few hours, sometimes split across multiple sessions for comfort and accuracy.

Shorter screenings are also available if you are looking for a quick overview rather than a full evaluation. The Oak Tree Practice team can advise on the best approach based on your goals and needs.

How Often Should A Cognitive Assessment Be Done?

There is not a fixed time schedule for repeating a cognitive assessment, as it largely depends on your individual circumstances. Some people may only need a one-off assessment, while others may benefit from follow-ups to track changes or progress over time.

Regular reassessments can be useful in educational or clinical settings, or when monitoring recovery from illness or injury. Our team can recommend the timing that will be most useful.

Can You Help With Non-Verbal Cognitive Assessments?

Yes, we can provide non-verbal cognitive assessments for individuals who may have communication difficulties or prefer tasks that do not rely on language. These assessments focus on problem-solving, pattern recognition, memory and visual reasoning.

They are designed to give an accurate understanding of cognitive strengths and areas for support without requiring spoken or written responses. Our team tailor the approach to ensure it is accessible, comfortable and informative.
