Hi, I’m Kat, I’m a Clinical Psychologist.
Can you tell me a bit about your experience?
I have over ten years of experience working in mental health. I began working in the NHS in 2010 and have supported people across the lifespan from young children to older adults with a range of difficulties. In my NHS work I am currently based in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health team which supports young people and their families with a variety of mental health needs. As well as therapeutic work I also provide supervision and training for Clinical Psychologists and other colleagues.
My previous NHS roles have spanned a range of areas in adult and child mental health, including a specialist eating disorder team, a postnatal mental health service and a long term health conditions service. My thesis examined Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in the postnatal period. Overseas experience in hospitals in India and South Africa prior to my Clinical Psychology training fostered a passion in inclusive and culturally sensitive work.
I have experience working with stress, low mood, anxiety and worry, relationship and family difficulties, low self-esteem/confidence, coping with the loss of a loved one, OCD, eating disorders, the impact of trauma and adjusting to new life circumstances.
What would it be like to meet you?
Taking the step to see a therapist can, understandably, be challenging, so my first aim is to build a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe to explore and work with their challenges and strengths. I endeavour to provide a compassionate and empathic space, approaching difficulties with kindness and curiosity. I find it invaluable to consider the stories people have about themselves and others,
holding in mind the impact this can have on their outlook. I aim to work with people to minimise the extent to which their difficulties define how they feel about themselves.
What type of therapies do you use?
I believe it is important to tailor my approach to the goals of the client and their overall wellbeing. The therapeutic models I draw on in particular include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. My thinking is informed by an understanding of attachment theory and how early relationships and experiences leave a blueprint throughout a person’s life. With these skills I aim to provide a depth and flexibility to the client’s sessions to really suit the individual.
What do you enjoy outside of psychology?
Spending time with people is important to me so, as much as I can, I enjoy being with my family and friends. I have a playful French Bulldog so I often spend sunny Sundays strolling around Hackney through its various parks. Music has always been a passion of mine so I busy myself making lots of playlists and try to get to lots of live music.
