Dr Jemma Ambrose
Hello, I’m Jemma. I am a Clinical Psychologist and I work mostly in the NHS.
Can you tell me a bit about your background?
I have always been interested in clinical psychology and supporting people at difficult times. Over the past nine years, I have been very lucky to work with children, young people, families, and adults across a range of health settings and charities. I have completed a MSc in Clinical and Forensic Psychology and more recently my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at University College London. I currently work within the NHS with children, young people, and families.
One of my interests is working with physical health conditions and helping individuals use psychological ideas to adapt, continue with meaningful goals and manage at times of difficulty.
What will it be like when I meet you?
I believe that it is important for us to develop a good working relationship and for you to feel safe and comfortable in meetings. I would hope to achieve this by being warm and friendly, ensuring that I follow your pace and creating a space where you feel listened to, heard and feel the expert in you and your experiences.
The first time we meet, we’d talk about what brought you to the meeting and what future meetings and our work together might look like. We’d also talk about some of your hopes and intentions for the future.
Through our meetings, we would use psychological ideas to explore your experiences, relationships, the values you hold and the environment around you. This would help us understand what may be contributing to any current challenges or distress and together explore ways to facilitate meaningful change that could help to reduce distress.
What types of therapy do you use and what kind of difficulties do you help people with?
As a Clinical Psychologist I draw on different therapies when working with individuals and families. I believe that this flexible approach helps to fit around individual values experiences and contexts.
I am experienced working with adults, children, young people and families presenting with a range of difficulties including low mood, anxiety, stress, family conflict, distress around times of transition, and those adapting to a new situation or medical condition. The therapeutic models I draw on include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and Narrative & Systemic approaches.
What do you enjoy outside of psychology?
I enjoy spending time outdoors, particularly by the sea. I like being active through running, walking, and exercising at home. I like to spend time with the important people in my life and recently I have taken up crocheting small blankets.
